Dade's favorite display of fireworks, New Salem's Independence Day extravaganza, starts this year at 10 p.m. on Saturday outside the New Salem Community Center and Fire Department. But District 4 Commissioner Allan Bradford, who represents New Salem, says the fireworks are extremely popular and it's best to get there a good deal earlier if you want a place to park. "Otherwise, you could end up walking a good ways," he said.
Anyway, said Bradford, though the fireworks are the final course and superstar of Saturday's event, they're not all there is on the menu. There will be music at the community center all day long and barbecue starting at about 2 p.m., courtesy of New Salem's volunteer firefighters. A patriotic ceremony complete with flag and honor guard will take place around 9 p.m.
As usual, contributions will be cheerfully accepted to support the volunteer fire department--and remember, said Bradford, the fireworks are not cheap, but cost the FD upwards of $10,000. 'It's probably one of the best displays in the area," he said.
