Which National Park is the Largest? The Smallest? National Park Month Continues at Library

For those who come to our Book Club at the library, we have a change in schedule. We will meet on Tuesday, August 23, instead of our regular date of the 16th. The change is just for this month because of a conflict with other meetings. We will be discussing Sanibel Flats by Randy Wayne White. Our book for September is My Southern Journey by Rick Bragg, so get reading.

There was a big event in the world of books last week. A new Harry Potter book came out on July 31, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. My copy from Amazon arrived in the mail on Monday, Aug. 1, and I finished it on Tuesday, Aug. 2. I don’t want to give out any spoilers, so I will just say that if you’re a Harry Potter fan, you will want to read it. I liked the story, but not the format. It isn’t in novel form, it’s a script. The play opened in London on July 31, and it really wasn’t convenient for me to make that performance, so I had to settle for reading the script. The library has a copy on order and we hope to have it available soon. Major characters in the story are Harry’s youngest son, Albus Severus Potter, and his best friend, the son of another familiar character, but I’ll let you find out for yourself just who that is.

Our Ready-to-Read program for pre-schoolers resumes on Thursday, August 18, at 10:30 a.m. Our first program is Welcome to the Library. The program lasts about an hour.

This month at the library we are celebrating 100 years of National Parks in America. We’re having a national park photo contest that is open to the public. Bring in your best photo taken in a national park. Please bring a 5x7 copy and put your name, phone number and the name of the park where it was taken. Remember, only photos from national parks, not state parks. Photos must be turned in by Aug. 26, and the winner will be announced on August 30 at our 100th anniversary celebration at the library. We will have a slide show on national parks at 7 p.m. with cake and punch to celebrate.

Last week I asked which park has the most visitors each year. In case you didn’t immediately run and look that up, I will tell you that the most visited national park is probably one that most of us have visited, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are 59 national parks in America, and there are also military parks, monuments and other designations that are supervised by the National Park Service. There are more national parks in the West than in the East. Come to our slide show on Aug. 30 and learn more about our national parks and see some beautiful scenery. We will have books available and maps and pictures on display.

National Park questions of the week: Do you know which national park is the largest? The smallest? Answers next week, if you can wait that long.
