Rev. Mike King of Rising Fawn United Methodist church began Thursday night's pray-for-rain session with the Mark Twain quote about everybody complaining about the weather but nobody doing anything about it. Whether or not King and company did anything about it, who can know? But the fact remains, it doesn't hurt to ask.
About 30 people gathered in the Trenton town square to pray with King and with Trenton United Methodist pastor Reece Fauscett and to sing along to a guitar rendition of Amazing Grace. The crowd prayed not just for rain to end the month and more of wildfires that have ravaged Dade County but to keep firefighters from the Georgia Forestry Commission and the county's volunteer fire departments unharmed. Fauscett asked God to "build hedges of safety" around them, and gave thanks that so far no serious injuries have been sustained.
Under grueling drought conditions, Dade is still struggling with a massive-GFC on Friday morning put the acreage at 2336--wildfire in the Tatum Gulf area of Lookout Mountain and a 100-acre blaze in the Creek Road area. The Creek Road fire is 98 percent contained, Tatum Gulf only 40. On Friday morning, Dade air is thick enough with smoke to reduce visibility.
At the prayer meeting, the town gazebo was festooned with umbrellas and Rev. King urged listeners to carry theirs in the days that come as symbols of faith and hope.
