Here are the details from the hit-and-run accident last week previously reported by The Dade Planet.
Georgia State Patrolman Jason Ballard arrested Maksimilian Averyonovich Bazelyuk, 22, of Covington, Ga., in the early hours of Friday, Nov. 25, in connection with a hit-and-run accident on I-24 in Dade County.
According to an arrest report quoted by GSP Sgt. James McConathy, Bazelyuk (right) was traveling east on I-24 Thursday night when he veered onto the shoulder to improperly pass a vehicle traveling in the right lane. He struck the guardrail, richocheted off and hit the vehicle he was passing on its passenger side.
The vehicle he struck, driven by Nicholas Carroll, 19, of South Pittsburg, Tenn., also struck the guardrail, lost control, and tumbled down the embankment, overturning several times. It landed upright, with injuries to both its occupants.
Carroll was transported by ambulance to Erlanger Medical Center. His passenger, Elizabeth Leann Dykes, also 19 and also of South Pittsburg, was airlifted there, with what the report listed as nonlethal and non-incapacitating head injuries.
Bazelyuk left the scene of the accident still traveling east, but was later apprehended by a Dade County deputy on I-59 in Dade County, when his vehicle, damaged during the incident, matched the description given at the scene of the I-24 incident. He was booked into the Dade County jail early Friday morning on charges including leaving the scene of an accident, DUI, reckless driving, driving too fast for conditions, driving on the shoulder, et cetera, all misdemeanor offenses, as well as the felony charge of serious injury by vehicle.
According to the Dade County Sheriff's Department, which furnished these photos, Bazelyuk remains in custody pending $10,000 bail. His case will be bound over to Dade Superior Court..
