DeKalb Sheriff's Department Weekend Report

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department reported it had had stayed busy over the past weekend. Here are some highlights:

On Sunday, DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies and Sylvania police officers went to a residence on County Road 515 on a "welfare check," that is, to check that all was well, probably pursuant to a phone tip, department personnel explained.

When they arrived at the residence, they found Heather Nicole Smith (left), 27, of Fort Payne, Ala., apparently under the influence of drugs and in possession of a knife, they reported. The officers asked Smith several times to drop the knife but she would not. Smith instead stabbed at the air, climbed up on a washing machine and started stabbing toward the deputies and officers, they said. In order to keep Smith and themselves safe, the deputies tased Smith to get the knife away from her. Smith was arrested and charged with assault and fesisting Arrest.

In an unrelated incident, on Saturday DeKalb deputies and Fyffe police officers were called to a trailer park address on County Road 52 to investigate a large house party with underage drinking. When they arrived, they found several minors under the age of 21 who had been drinking. Marijuana was also present at the residence. As a result, Timothy Levi Guffey (right), 22, of Collinsville, Ala., was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and Illegal open house party. Attempts were made to contact parents of the minors at the party. This is still an ongoing investigation.

On Friday, the Sheriff’s Department received a call from a concerned citizen about a vehicle sitting in the parking lot of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church on Highway 227 with its male driver apparently passed out. When deputies arrived, they tried waking the driver, and after several attempts he did wake up. When deputies got the male subject from the vehicle it appeared he was under the influence of something, in the vehicle they found a scales, a white powered substance and some pills.

At that time the DeKalb County Drug and Major Crimes Unit was called to the scene. Chandler Scott Poss (left), 25 of Boaz was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and public intoxication.

DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris commented: "Deputies and our fellow officers had a busy weekend and did a great job on these arrest and keeping everyone safe.”
