It's official: Trenton is losing an important eatery and gathering place as Randy's Restaurant closes its doors after 30 years of serving everything from pizza to steaks, seafood to three-pound hamburgers.
Proprietors Randy and Janice Howard were unavailable for comment on Wednesday, but their granddaughter, Casey Howard, confirmed that the restaurant's last day will be Jan. 15. "They're tired," she said of her grandparents.
The Howards have attempted to retire more than once over the years, the last time just in 2015 when they sold the business to a couple of employees--then found themselves taking it back over after some five or six months when the employees opted to go back to being employees.
This time, no successors are in the wing to take over, said the granddaughter. Her parents' generation of Howards all have careers of their own and her own is still a little young to step up, she said.
Another popular lunch place in town, The Post Cafe, is also down for the count--though at present it would be premature to pronounce it a TKO. Proprietor Mike White had earlier stressed that though the future of the American Legion Post 106 meeting hall which houses the cafe is uncertain, he would keep the cafe going for the foreseeable future.
Post leadership had announced intentions of selling the mortgaged Legion hall in the face of declining bingo revenues. Then, amid a surge of donations, the post commander, Gen. Robert Woods, announced the post would struggle to pay off the mortgage instead.
On Wednesday, Gen. Woods did not immediately return phone calls requesting an update; but meanwhile the cafe's closure was announced by the above-depicted sign on the Legion hall door.
