Library News: Come to Free Storytelling Workshop--Then Tell Us Your Story!

We are sorry to say that there will be no AARP volunteers to do free tax prep in Dade County this year. You can call AARP at (888) 687-2277 to find out where the nearest volunteer is.

We know that many people have used this service over the years, but no one stepped forward to volunteer and go to the training this year. This is not a library service but was done by AARP volunteers. We do have these tax forms available at the library: 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ.

As I have mentioned before, the library has received a grant to purchase video equipment to record Dade County’s history. The title of the project is Capture: A Living History of Dade County. Some people need a little help getting started on telling their story, so we have invited international storyteller Finn Bille to conduct a storytelling workshop to help people get started. This FREE workshop will be January 18 from 3-5 p.m. at the Dade County Public Library.

When Mary Petruska wrote about Finn Bille’s last storytelling workshop in Trenton, she said, “He managed to get nearly everyone in the circle to tell a story.” A regional story storyteller based in Chattanooga, Finn has performed at many festivals in the Southeast. He tells family stories from his childhood in Denmark and stories about his immigration to America. His CD, Marzipan: Stories with Music with Rick Davis on the hammered dulcimer, includes two stories from his childhood as well as a fantastic story about writing poetry. This program is supported in part by the Georgia Council for the Arts.

There will be several more opportunities for people to record their living history at the library. Our next session is Tuesday, January 31, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Come to this free workshop to get ideas for your story.

Interested in learning more about your family’s history? Remember, Ancestry.com may be accessed at the library for free.

Our Ready-to-Read session for Thursday will be about the Zoo. We begin at 10:30 a.m. Our next Family Movie will be Thursday, January 26, at 3 p.m. at the library.
