"Obamacare has failed, and Republicans are on a mission to rescue the families caught up in its death spiral."
Thus begins a press release from the office of Congressman Tom Graves, Dade County's voice in the U.S. House of Representatives, giving a pretty clear answer to Dade residents wondering what will happen to their current health coverage under the new administration.
Graves, who voted in January to begin the process of undoing Obamacare, in the aforementioned press release directs constituents to an op-ed essay in The Atlanta Journal Constitution he co-authored with other Republican members of Congress on the subject of health care. The op-ed piece cites examples of working families who pay more for insurance under Obamacare than they did pre-Obamacare. It rather pointedly does not cite examples of the millions who had no insurance before and are now covered.
But it promises that Graves and company have a plan to replace the status quo: "While applying a smooth and stable transition to ensure no one has the rug pulled out from under them, we have already started our replacement plan, which will be formed around 'A Better Way,' ”reads the article.
"A Better Way," says the article, offers "more choices and lower costs" as well as "the ability to shop for plans across state lines to increase competition." It will support discovery and development of medical advances, and: "Finally, a Better Way offers a three-step approach to save and strengthen Medicare," say the authors.
Dade readers who are worried about losing the coverage they have, curious about how A Better Way will be better, or puzzled about what "saving Medicare" may entail will shortly have a chance to discuss their concerns with Rep. Graves in person. The congressman will be visiting Dade County Tuesday, March 7, to make himself available to local constituents.
Graves will be in the Commission Room of the Dade County Administrative Building from 10 a.m.-noon on the 7th.
