Bd. of Ed. News: Gov.'s Office Honors Dade Elementary With 2016 Gold Award

DES students Ella Hawkins and Paul Phillips step up to greet Pam Williams, the governor's representative, with smiles and faultlessly delivered speeches as Tracy Blevins, principal, looks on.

Monday's official monthly meeting of the Dade County Board of Education was--as happened in January--nothing to write home about. Most business had been taken care of at an informal workshop the week before, and all that remained was to vote officially on some routine bid and bill approvals. The meeting was over about 19 minutes after it began.

But this morning offered gladder tidings and a more interesting photo opp as educators and officials gathered at Dade Elementary School to greet a representative from Georgia Governor Nathan Deal's office. Pam Williams, education outreach coordinator, arrived at DES from Atlanta shortly after 10 a.m. to congratulate Principal Tracy Blevins and her staff on winning the Governor's 2016 Gold Award for three years of stellar improvement in academic achievement.

On hand to greet the governor's rep were from left to right, Dade County District 3 Commissioner Robert Goff, Dade County Executive Ted "The Boss" Rumley, Schools Superintendent Dr. Jan Harris, Boad of Education Chairperson Carolyn Bradford, DES Principal Tracy Blevins and Ms. Williams.

At the Monday B of E meeting, Dr. Harris announced that the three-hour training session required for substitute teachers in Dade schools would take place from 9 a.m.-noon on March 14 at the Board of Education office in front of Dade High on 136 E. For more information on that, readers may call the office at (706) 657-4361.
