Christy Smith was named Trenton's new top cop at Monday night's regular March meeting of the Trenton City Commission. She will take over from Trenton Police Chief Roger Castleberry upon his retirement later this month.

An investigator with the Trenton Police Department, Officer Smith had earlier served with the Dade Sheriff's Department and late last year was named acting Trenton chief while Castleberry took some time off.

Another candidate for the chief job, Jeff Hartline, also a current TPD officer, was named assistant chief.

Trenton Mayor Alex Case explained that the four candidates for the job had all been rated by a panel of disinterested police officials from out of town as well as by the city commissioners and himself,

The other two candidates were Mike Norris, also a city policeman, and David Duvall, a longtime employee of the Dade Sheriff's Department.
