If you have ever wondered about how to download books to your phone, tablet or e-reader, now would be great time to try it—for FREE. Come by the library on Fridays in March (except March 31) to get help downloading Overdrive so that you can use this service, which is free if you have a library card. You can access e-books and electronic audiobooks.
(We’re having a little competition between our library and the other branches in our system to see who can add the most patrons to Overdrive, so help us out and help yourself to free electronic downloads at the same time!)
Last March, I remember seeing posts on Facebook with people asking, “What is going on on the Square?” or “Why are all those people at the library?” Well, the answer was that they were attending Read to Lead. Dade County’s third annual Read to Lead program will be Saturday, March 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dade County Public Library and Veterans Park on the square.
We’ll be celebrating National Reading Month and Dr. Seuss’s birthday! There will be stories read by leaders in the Dade County community and entertainment by the Davis Elementary School chorus and other groups. There will be snacks, games, crafts, free haircuts, Noah’s Ark Petting Zoo (10 a.m.-noon), face painting and a photo booth. Kids will receive free books and there will be door prizes, including an autographed Dolly Parton children’s book and Dollywood tickets.
We had a really good turnout for this event last year. It is sponsored by Dade First Family Connections and the Dade County Public Library.
The Book Club will meet at the library on Tuesday, March 21, to discuss Stephen King’s Mr. Mercedes. Mr. Mercedes is pretty much a straight-up detective novel. Retired detective Bill Hodges is working on his own to uncover the identity of Mr. Mercedes, the mass murderer who killed several people by running a stolen Mercedes into a crowd of people waiting in line to apply for a job. Hodges is retired, but the killer contacts him, and the question is if Hodges can catch him before he becomes the killer’s next victim.
This week’s ready to read class will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Wear your green!
The folks from the Dade County Historical Society will have a short business meeting at the library on Saturday, March 25, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a genealogy workshop that will last until about 1:30 p.m. If you are working on genealogy and would like some assistance, we will have members on hand to help you out. Remember, Ancestry.com can be accessed for free at the library.
On Friday, March 31, there will be a reception at the library for Captured: Dade County’s Living History. It will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More details on this next week.
