GFC Rangers Read to DES Kids

Georgia Forestry Commissioner (GFC) rangers read The Tree Farmer, by Chuck Leavell and Nicholas Cravotta, to Dade County Elementary School students last week. Smokey the Bear made a special appearance to remind kids not to play with matches.

"We do more than just fight fire," said GFC's Bobby Dunn, who took this snap. "We love to visit the schools and play with the kids because you know we're still kids at heart."

His fellow GFC rangers Ted Rumley II and Kerry Phillips are the book reader and bear above.

It's easy to forget GFC in rainy season but when the woods dry out and mountainsides begin to blaze, the rangers are front and center. Their profile has been rather high since drought gripped the area last fall. and huge swathes of the county caught fire. Those mega-blazes subsided with December's rains but last week saw an encore performance as two wildfires raged simultaneously in Wildwood and Middleton Estates, engaging not just the GFC but all Dade's volunteer fire departments.

The Dade Planet congratulates its local GFC heroes for having had a day off to read to kids!
