Lt. Anthony Bartley, a school resource officer (SRO) with the DeKalb County (Ala.)Sheriff’s Department, was named DARE officer of the year on March 21 by Sgt. Robin Snider, the DARE coordinator for Alabama, who visited DeKalb to present hi with the award.
DARE, an acronym for Drug Abuse Resistance Education., is a police program designed to equip elementary school children with the life skills to recognize and resist social pressures to experiment with tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.
Lt. Bartley started in 1992 at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department as a jailer. He was promoted to chief jail administrator in 1994. He has also worked in the department as a deputy. In 1995 he became a school resource/ DARE officer for the DeKalb County School System and worked his way up to lieutenant/school resource-DARE supervisor.
“Lt. Bartley has put in a lot of hard work and long hours coordinating the DARE program between all of the other school resource officers, the DeKalb County School System and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office,” said DeKalb Sheriff Jimmy Harris. “Lt. Bartley has done an outstanding job and this award is well deserved.”
