Spivey New Principal of DMS

Dr. Sandra Spivey was named the new principal of Dade Middle School at Monday's special called work session of the Dade Board of Education.

Dr. Spivey is currently the superintendent of

Scottsboro City Schools. A native of Scottsboro, she holds bachelor's, master's and Ph.D degrees from Auburn University. She began her educational career as a high school math teacher and has worked for the Alabama State Department of Education and as an adjunct professor for Samford University as well as an assistant principal and principal in Alabama schools.

"I've known her as a colleague in Alabama and I hold her in high regard," said Dade Schools Superintendent Dr. Jan Harris of the new administrator. "I'm sure she'll be an asset to our system."

Charity Barton and Brent Cooper were hired as assistant principals of Dade High School. For Cooper, this is a promotion; he is currently a math teacher at the middle school. Charity Barton has been working in Chattanooga schools, but she lives in Dade County and graduated from high school here, said Dr. Harris.

Dr. Harris said she had received 22 applications for the DMS principal job and that newly-anointed DCHS principal James Fahrney had received a whopping 79 for the assistant principal jobs. She said both had interviewed using a similar committee approach. In the case of the DMS principal job, DMS teachers elected by their coworkers were included on the selection committee as well as Central Office administrators. "We were all in agreement" as to the final choice, said Dr. Harris.

The school board also voted to accept the resignation of teacher Jessica Echegary and the retirement of teacher Jane Jansen Van Rensburg.

Kaitlyn Rhoden and Bill Tillman were named volleyball coach and assistant coach, respectively, at the middle school.

The Planet will report further on the board meeting at a later time.
