Spring term in Dade Superior Court wound quietly down today without many jury trials. Most cases involved drugs and most defendants negotiated pleas. Still, The Planet here provides outcomes of a few cases that have figured in Dade news lately.
Maksimilian Bazelyuk (left), who was arrested Thanksgiving night after leaving the scene of a hit-and-run accident that injured two 19-year-olds, negotiated guilty pleas to two felony charges of serious injury by vehicle and one of reckless driving. He was sentenced to 15 years of jail time on each of those, to be served concurrently. Prosecutors agreed not to pursue other charges against Bazelyuk including traffic offenses and one of leaving the scene of an accident.
Bazelyuk was listed as a resident of Covington, Georgia, and 22 years old at the time of his arrest in November. He was arrested after striking the teens' vehicle Thanksgiving night while passing it improperly in the right-hand shoulder of eastbound I-24. While on the shoulder, he struck the guardrail and richocheted off, causing his car to hit the teens'. Their vehicle also hit the guardrail and tumbled down an embankment, injuring both. Bazelyuk left the scene still traveling east but was later apprehended on I-59 in Dade County by a Dade deputy who had recognized the description of his vehicle, which had been damaged during the accident.
The trial of Charles Kevin Wooten, 40 (right), of a Sand Mountain address, was continued until Dade Superior's October term on the condition that Wooten not seek bond. He remains in the Dade jail on charges from multiple arrests in 2016 and one in January of this year. Those charges include possession and trafficking of methamphetamine and cocaine.
The elder Charles "Charlie" Wooten, also facing meth charges as well as one of receiving stolen property and another of attempting to elude an officer, is out on bond as he, too, awaits an October trial date.
The trial of Daniel Snyder (left), listed as 27 and of Logansport, Ind., when he was arrested Dec. 17, has also been continued. Snyder, out of jail on $10,000 bond, faces charges of theft and DUI after a Christmas week joyride in a vehicle that didn't belong to him ended at a North Dade residence where an alarmed homeowner opened fire on him.
Brandon Bettis (below), listed as 26 and of McDonald, Tenn., when he was arrested on Dec. 15 after allegedly leading Dade deputies on a wild car chase that also ended in gunfire, remains in the Dade jail--his trial was also continued to the October term.
