Dear Editor:
I am the CEO and founder, along with my wife Dori, of Savannah's Canopy. We are a ministry to foster and adoptive kids, foster and adoptive parents, and to those children and parents who are in danger of falling into the foster care system without help.
My wife and I have adopted 6 children and fostered many others over the last 14 years. We also try to help others become foster parents and helping foster and at risk children in any way we can. It is rewarding but exhausting work as you might imagine. It is also very expensive.

Many months ago, much to our surprise, we were contacted by Sheriff Cross and asked if we might like to be the beneficiary of a fund raiser. It was totally out of the blue and unexpected. No one had ever done anything like that for us before. We accepted having no idea how much work and time the Sheriff and his staff would put into this endeavor.
Carolyn Lane was in contact with us for months and worked so hard to make the fundraiser a success. They required nothing of us, it was just a gift with no strings attached. We were humbled to say the least.
The fundraiser was scheduled for Saturday, May 6. Wouldn't you know, the weather was awful. It was cloudy and windy all day and began to rain later that evening. Music had been scheduled to go on all day and into the night with a big fireworks display at the end. The rain made the music impossible, but the fireworks were beautiful. Despite the rain the Sheriff, Carolyn and the others worked hard all day.
A few days later we were presented with a check for $10,000 to go toward the care of children and their families who much need support. We can never repay this wonderful gift, but we wanted to say thank you to all those who worked so hard and for those who turned out, even in bad weather, to support the event.
