Library News: Timothy Johns' Magic and Puppet Show June 15

I’m going to start with Summer Reading activities for adults this week, because we have two things going on:

On Saturday, June 17, starting at 10 a.m., we will have another sewing class. This time we’ll be teaching a class on how to make a pillowcase dress. The completed dresses will be donated to children in need.

On Tuesday, June 20, we will have our other adult program–our Book Club meeting. We will be discussing All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. It begins at 7 p.m.

For those of you who might be interested in joining the Book Club, here is a list of the books we will be discussing for the remainder of this year:

July – The Boys in the Boat (NF) by Daniel James Brown. Nine Americans and their epic quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

August – But What If We’re Wrong? (NF) by Chuck Klosterman,. Thinking about the present as if it were the past. This book asks questions that will make you think.

September – A Man Called Ove (F) by Fredrick Backman. This New York Times bestseller about a curmudgeon called Ove is sad, comical and heart-warming.

October – The Underground Railroad (F) by Colson Whitehead. What if the Underground Railroad was not a metaphor, but a real railroad with tracks and stations? The story of Cora, a slave on a Georgia plantation, trying to escape her bondage. National Book Award winner.

November – Alas, Babylon (F) by Pat Frank, a novel of a post-nuclear holocaust world in the United States. At the time it was written (1959), the threat was very real and people were building bomb shelters in their backyards.

December – Christmas party and Book Selection

The Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the library.

This week’s Summer Reading program for the kids will be Tommy Johns, with magic, puppets, music and games. He always does a great show. It’s Thursday, June 15, at 10:30 a.m.

This is not strictly library news, but it might be of interest to some of you. The Dade County Historical Society will meet on June 17 at 10 a.m., but instead of meeting at the library, it will meet at the Dade Probate Judge’s office in the new courthouse. After a short business meeting, Probate Judge Kerri Carter will talk to us about the records in the Probate office and how to use them in researching our family histories. We will be there until about 2 p.m.
