Don Hicks to Challenge Sandra Gray For Trenton Police Commissioner

The qualification period for two elected city of Trenton positions ends at 4:30 this afternoon, and so far five people have qualified, according to the Dade County Board of Elections.

Kenny Jeffrey is challenging Parks and Recreation/Animal Control Commissioner Terry Powell in the Nov. 7 election. John Taylor and Don Hicks (left) will try to unseat sitting Police Commissioner Sandra Gray (below). Don Hicks is chief investigator for the Dade County Sheriff’s Department.

Generally, three city commission seats are up for reelection at a time, but this year the city commission made the city clerk job an appointed rather than elected one, through locally requested state legislation that the commissioners have yet to announce to the voters.

This city commission election is to be combined with the city referendum on liquor by the drink and with the countywide referendum on the transportation special purpose local option sales tax (TSPLOST). City voters will vote at the Dade Administrative Building rather than Trenton City Hall.

This arrangement will continue for subsequent city elections.
