GDOT says Trenton's funky central intersection will be fixed by the end of October. But there's more in store for Dade, including a bridge replacement on Highway 136.
The Georgia Department of Transportation will hold two open-house style meetings in the northwest Georgia region to answer the public's questions and solicit the public's input on projects in this area. Neither meeting is in Dade County but from a glance at GDOT's STIP (Statewide Transportation Improvement Program) draft for the next few years, some Dade denizens might be interested in making the drive. GDOT has plans for us.
The meetings will be held from 5-7 p.m. next Thursday, Aug. 31, at the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, 200 Northside Drive in Carrollton; and Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Pickens County Library, 100 Library Lane in Jasper. Covered will be projects planned for Carroll, Chattooga, Dade, Fannin, Gilmer, Gordon, Haralson, Murray, Pickens, Polk and Walker counties.

Notable projects for Dade include a $3 million replacement of the bridge over Lookout Creek on Highway 136 East. GDOT also plans to replace the Newsome Gap Road Lookout Creek bridge in Rising Fawn and the Squirrel Town Creek bridge north of Trenton. It proposes to spend $360,500 on "streetscaping" and bike/pedestrian facilities in downtown Trenton, $15,000 for rail crossing consolidation on Lambert Lane in Rising Fawn, $1.5 million on interchange lighting and another million on improving pedestrian crossings at 11 locations in Dade and Walker combined.

As for the long-heralded work straightening out Trenton's crazily dog-legging central intersection at highways 136 and 11 in front of the Ingle's Market, Arafa says that's still on schedule and on budget and that the contractor has already done some work on it. "The poles and/or base have been poured and the boring for the conduit has been done," he wrote in an email. "The entire project, including the Dade County intersections, is expected to be completed by the end of October 2017."
