County Boss Rumley Recovering Well After Triple Bypass

Ted Rumley, executive chairman of the Dade County Commission, is doing well after triple bypass heart surgery on Monday, says his wife, Diane. But "the Boss" is still in a lot of pain and remains in the intensive care cardiac unit at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga.

“His vitals look great,” reported Ms. Rumley. “They should put him in a room later today.”

Dade's first lady said the heart surgery had come out of the blue for both of them but was not the result of a heart attack.

It all started lasted week, said Ms. Rumley. "He had a physical and stress test which came back not good," she reported. Then an arteriogram was done, detecting problems, following which the heart surgery was scheduled for Monday.

"The doctor said his heart is very strong with great muscle and function," said Ms. Rumley. "So the point is, everyone, especially men, should be aware of [the possibility of cardiac dysfunction] even if they have the tiniest symptoms."

The Dade County Commission was not expecting the Boss back for a few days, but his wife doesn't think the heart surgery will knock him down for long. "You know Ted," she concluded. "He doesn't take days off or vacations. I'm sure he'll have me drive him to the commission meeting next week."
