This morning, Friday, Sept. 1, DeKalb County (Ala.) Deputy Dustin Jones conducted a traffic stop on County Road 169 in the Higdon area, stopping a Ford Focus occupied by three adults and a minor child. As Deputy Jones approached the vehicle, he noticed that the driver appeared to be sticking something in his mouth. Deputy Jones asked the driver, Cody Durham (left), 28, of Trenton, to step out of the vehicle. During the subsequent search, a marijuana grinder was found in Durham’s pockets. Durham was placed under arrest and placed into custody.
After Durham was placed into the backseat of Deputy Jones’ vehicle, the front passenger in Durham’s car, Jared Haggard (right), 26, of Higdon, jumped into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and sped off with the other occupants of the car, an adult female and minor child, still in the backseat. A Drug Task Force agent and another deputy took over the ensuing pursuit, which led to County Road 1948 and ended with the Focus wrecking into a tree.
Upon wrecking the car, Haggard, along with Whitney Durham, 24, also of Higdon, took off on foot into the woods, taking the child with them. Family members found Whitney Durham (left) and the child in a wooded area just of County Road 817 and led authorities to them. Haggard was spotted in a small dark-colored vehicle a short time later. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle which fled into a field off County Road 817 before wrecking. Haggard again ran away on foot. He was later found hiding in an attic of a home on County Road 817.
Cody Durham was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana 2nd, resisting arrest and tampering with physical evidence. Jared Haggard was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana 2nd, endangering welfare of child and resisting arrest. Whitney Durham was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana 2nd, endangering welfare of child and resisting arrest. All three are currently in the DeKalb County jail awaiting bond.
The Department of Human Resources was contacted and a relative from Trenton took the child into care.
