Don't Be Fooled by Grand Jury/Sheriff's Deputy Scam

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office today learned that a scammer has been taking its name in vain.

The office has been informed that a man pretending to be an investigator or deputy with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office calls people saying he has warrants on them for failure to report for grand jury and that they can pay the amount over the phone. The two names used in the scam thus far are James Marshall with the phone number (256) 801-0885 and the name Jack Phillips with the number (720) 534-5137.

Calls are also coming from (256) 801-0885, with the caller telling people they have missed jury duty and if they don't pay the fine they will be arrested.

If you receive a call from one of these numbers or someone using these names, the sheriff's office wants you to know this is a scam. Please remember that you should not give any personal information to anyone over the phone and that the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office will never call you demanding money or telling you to pay a fine.

If you have any doubt about the identity of callers representing themselves as employees of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, hang up immediately and call the sheriff's department at (256) 845-3801 to confirm their identity.
