LendEDU, an online financial company specializing in refinancing for student loans, has named Trenton the 17th best town in Georgia for starting a small business.
If that sounds a little like being named Miss Congeniality in a beauty contest sponsored by a soap company, consider this: We beat hell out of Rock Spring.
Rock Spring, in neighboring Walker County, was named 93 in LendEDU’s list of the 100 best towns in Georgia to start businesses in. Next to 93, 17 sounds pretty spectacular, right? And think of all the Georgia towns that didn’t make the list at all!
Bogart and Watkinsville, over in Oconee County, close to cultural little college town Athens, were at the top of the list, Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. But also beating out the home team were Guyton, Evans, Hahira and Rincon, none of which The Planet could locate on a map. “Rincon” in fact sounds like a deliberate mispronunciation of America’s 16th president, or a luxury car in a bad old joke involving a rich Chinese.
In any case, it is safe to bet that none of these municipalities has the advantage of being located at the throbbing epicenter of the universe.
LendEDU said in a press release Monday it had graded the Georgia towns with “licensed data” in a complicated formula involving daytime population, disposable income and expenses, as being the best to set up shop in without applying for a small business loan. Over cities and 600 Georgia towns and cities were considered for the list.
(By the way, 17 of 100 is a B minus, while 17 of 600 is an A plus. Feel better?)
Waycross, Sylvania and Blairsville are at the bottom of the list as 98, 99 and 100, respectively. But again, they have the comfort of having outscored the unnamed 500 (who never got a sash at all, much less a bouquet or tiara).
Do you want to start a business in Dade? Trenton might just rank No. 17 according to the LendEDU study but it has, besides the center-of-the-universe edge that goes without saying, another advantage LendEDU may have overlooked: Free how-to-be-a-businessperson seminars and networking sessions hosted by Dade’s own entrepreneur extraordinaire, Nathan Wooten of the Greater Dade Business Owners’ Association.
