A Dade County school bus ran into a ditch this afternoon, according to the Dade County Sheriff's Office, which did not specify the cause of the wreck. Six students were transported to Children's Hospital via ambulance complaining of minor injuries.
Sgt. Chad Payne, information officer for the sherif's office, reported that 47 students were on the bus and one driver. Besides the six students who were taken for medical attention, all were turned over to their guardians on the scene or driven home by a substitute bus.
Sgt. Payne reported that Dade patrol cars were dispatched about 3:45 p.m. this afternoon to the accident scene, which was at the intersection of New Home and Brow roads atop Sand Mountain. The bus had at that point already been evacuated by its driver. Sheriff Ray Cross responded to the call along with his deputies. So did several Dade County Board of Education employees as well as volunteer fire department and emergency services personnel.
Sgt. Payne reports that the bus was in unstable enough condition that Sheriff Cross gave orders no one was allowed to board it.
The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol and by the Georgia Motor Carrier Compliance Division.
