DeKalb Deputy Dies in Car Wreck

Hearts at the DeKalb County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office are heavy today at the news the department has lost one of its own: DeKalb Deputy Daniel Matthews has been confirmed dead in a car accident, the sheriff's office said in a press release.

Matthews was 56 years old and had been a deputy in DeKalb for four years. He had worked at the department two years before attaining that title. He was also employed by the Fort Payne Housing Authority.

“I have worked with Daniel for many years," said Sheriff Jimmy Harris. "He was a good person and deputy. We are deeply saddened to have lost one of our deputies and it is hard for us because we are like family here at the sheriff’s office. Our thoughts and prayers goes out to his family.”

Chief Deputy Edmondson also commented. “We are a close-knit family and we are saddened about this tragedy," he said. "We are praying for his family and close friends. We also ask for the citizens to pray for his family and work family in the days to come.”
