Dade Schoolteachers of the Year Named



Amber Kent, Dade's Teacher of the Year.

Dade County Superintendent of Schools Jan Harris this week announced the system's 2017-2018 Teachers of the Year. These are:

  • Ms. Amber Kent, Dade County Teacher of the Year. Dr. Harris explained that Ms. Kent was first named Dade Elementary School Teacher of the Year. The school board then selected from the winning teachers at each school one to honor as overall system Teacher of the Year. Ms. Kent won.

  • Mr. Wil Martin, Dade County Secondary Teacher of the Year (Dade Middle School;

  • Ms. Marsha Townson, Davis Elementary Teacher of the Year;

  • Mr. Philip Bell, Dade County High School Teacher of the Year.

"These four outstanding individuals of character, competency and compassion represent all of us-- what we do each day and why we became teachers or those who support teachers," said Dr. Harris in a prepared release.

Each Teacher of the Year will receive a new desk and chair. The four winners will be recognized next week at the Nov. 13 Dade County Board of Education meeting at 6 p.m., when they will receive DCS Teacher of the Year pins. Further, their portraits by school librarian and photographer Carissa Webb will be displayed in the DCS Boardroom as well as in the 2017-2018 Annual Report.

In addition, the overall Dade County Teacher of the Year, Amber Kent, will receive $5000 for technology in her classroom, as well as a $500 grant from the Georgia Department of Education.
