Library News: We Now Have Searchable Digitized Old Dade Newspaper Records

Remember that the library will be closed Thursday and Friday of next week for Thanksgiving Day. It will reopen on Saturday for regular hours, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be no Ready-to-Read class next week, either. Ready-to-Read will resume on Thursday, Nov. 30.

The Friends of the Library have one more set of historical Dade County ornaments for sale. The full set is $150. We can still order more, but it takes about two weeks to get them back, so keep that in mind.

We also still have individual ornaments of the Dade County Courthouse, the Dyer Mercantile building (currently the home of Gross Furniture) and three of Sitton’s Mill. These are $15 each.

We have a new resource in our local history room. We have had our microfilm of old Dade County newspapers digitized. It begins with issues in the 1800s and goes through 2006. There are some issues and some years missing. There were some years in the 1800s when there was no paper.

Now that these are digitized, it is possible to search for topics or people. I just did a search for myself and found a few pictures from when I was in high school.

This is free for patrons to use. At this time, the database is only installed on one computer in the local history room.

In addition to old Dade County newspapers, we also have the Walker County Messenger. Also, one of our volunteers maintains an obituary collection for people looking for that information.
