The Book Club has selected the books to be read and discussed in 2018.
January 2018 – Small Great Things, by Jodi Picoult.
February – The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, by Wes Moore (NF). Two boys with the same name are born within blocks of each other, but their lives take starkly different paths.
March – Contempt of Court: The Turn of the Century Lynching That Launched a Hundred Years of Federalism, by Leroy Phillips (NF) This lynching took place on the Walnut Street Bridge in Chattanooga and the case went all the way to the Supreme Court. A fascinating account.
April – Memory Man, by David Baldacci (F). After a head injury on the football field, Amos Decker is a man who cannot forget anything, which might be helpful for a police detective. But sometimes, it’s not a good thing.
May – The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood (F). A totalitarian society controlled by a fundamentalist regime where women are treated as property of the state.
June – Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance (NF). A beautiful memoir and a work of cultural criticism about white, working class America.
July – Raven Black, by Anne Cleeves (F). Set in the beautiful but remote Shetland Islands, Raven Black is a classic British murder mystery.
August – Isaac’s Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane In History, by Erik Larsen (NF). The true story of the hurricane that hit Galveston, Texas, in 1900.
September – Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston (F). Love, hate, murder, gossip, travel, politics, poetry, death and life—this classic novel has it all.
October – The Witches: Suspicion, Betrayal and Hysteria in 1692 Salem by Stacy Schiff (NF). A riveting account of an American mystery unveiled by one of America’s most acclaimed historians.
November – Consider the Fork: A History of How We Cook and Eat by Bee Wilson, (NF). Blending history, science and personal anecdotes, Wilson reveals how our culinary tools and tricks came to be and how their influence has shaped food culture today.
December – Christmas Party and Book Selection.
January 2019 – Before We Were Yours: A Novel, by Lisa Wingate (HF). Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals in which the director of a Tennessee adoption agency kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy people all over the country.
