Library News: E-Mags Now Downloadable at Library

First, a correction. A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that Dade First-Family Connections met at the library on the fourth Tuesday of each month. That should be the fourth THURSDAY of each month. They meet at 12:30 p.m. and lunch is provided. My apologies for the mistake. Their next meeting will be on Thursday, January 25.

Dade First-Family Connections is sponsoring a financial planning session on Tuesday, January 23, which will include information on budgeting, tax tips, credit, insurance and home ownership. It will be at the library at 5:30 p.m. and a free meal will be provided, but please call to register so we will know how many to prepare for. Call Martha Baker at (423) 883-6938 or call the library at 657-7857.

There will be a Beginners Computer Class at the library on Tuesday, January 30. There will be one session at 10 a.m. and one at 6 p.m. Please call the library and sign up if you are interested.

We take requests! If there is a new book coming out that you would like to see at the library, tell one of our staff members and we will put in on our request list to order. We received two boxes of new books last week: children’s, Junior and Young Adult books.

We have some VHS movies for sale for those of you who still have a VCR. Only $1 each. We were closed one day and part of another day last week because of bad weather. We had to postpone some meetings that were to be held at the library. Please check our Facebook pages for the most up-to-date information, either the Friends page at Friends of the Dade County Georgia Public Library page or the library’s Facebook page, Dade County Public Library.

As I mentioned last week, there will be some changes for our patrons who use electronic downloads. Below is the information on this from the Cherokee Regional Library website:

On February 6, the Cherokee Regional Library System will be switching to a new vendor, RBDigital, for access to audiobooks and ebooks, and now e-magazines!

Why the change?

RBDigital offers us the ability to provide you with not only ebooks and e-audiobooks, but also e-magazines and e-audiobooks with no holds or waiting periods. We will also utilize RBDigital’s competitive pricing to offer more content for our patrons.

What will change exactly?

A new vendor, RBDigital, will be replacing our current vendor (Overdrive) as the platform for which we distribute downloadable materials. This means that there will be a new website to go to for those of you who access content on your computers, and a new app to download if you use a smart device. We will post specific links as the time for the big change approaches.

And, don’t forget, we will now have access to e-magazines!

When will the change take effect?

Our new contract begins February 6. You may see some changes now–as of today, all Overdrive holds have been suspended.

Will all my devices still work?

Starting February 6, patrons will be directed to the RBDigital platform, which will offer a similar experience to the existing platform. Users who read or listen on desktop computers, laptops, mobile devices and tablets will continue to have the ability to download and enjoy these materials. Users who own dedicated Kindle e-readers, such as the Paperwhite, will need to contact RBDigital’s helpline for assistance, due to Amazon’s proprietary e-book format.

Feel free to call or come by the library if you have any questions about this.
