Don't Forget: GDOT, Cloudland Canyon Dance...and More!

There's a lot happening around the old hometown this week, so at this point a reminder seemed in order:

If you live in South Dade, you might want to pop by the Dade Senior Center this afternoon for a "detour open house" given by the Georgia Department of Transportation's (GDOT) to inform the public about its proposed project to rehabilitate two bridges over I-59. The do is from 5 until 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 6, and you can pop by any time during those hours to see GDOT's presentation or ask questions. The Dade Senior Center is located at 9622 Highway 11 South between Trenton and Rising Fawn, beside the Four Fields and walking track.

Then, on Thursday, Feb. 8, don't forget that Friends of Cloudland Canyon State Park's dance at 7 p.m. in the group shelter at the state park. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission price of $8 a pop, $15 for couples, will benefit the park.

If you miss Thursday's dance, there will be another one on March 8, and the Friends group says if there's enough interest the event will become a monthly one.

Then, on Saturday, Feb. 10, Trenton United Methodist Church is hosting a "Church Safety Summit" from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. There is a day-long training on child abuse prevention, sponsored by Dade First-Family Connection, but Dade Emergency Services, the Dade Sheriff's Office and the Trenton Police Department will also give presentations on weather preparedness and shooter incidents. If you're interested, and have not yet registered, you may call Dade First's Martha Baker for more information at (423) 883-6938.

Alternatively, if art is more your thing, be at the Dade Public library from 3-5 p.m. Saturday afternoon for a viewing and group discussion of "Big Bang," an abstract painting. The event will be hosted by storyteller Finn Bille, with his brother Per Henrik Bille, the painter, joining by Skype.

The event is free and open to the public. Finn Bille says you don't have to know anything about art.
