The Dade County Commission has called a special meeting for 5 p.m. this Thursday, Feb. 15, in its regular meeting room in the Dade Administrative Building. The only two items listed on the agenda are a resolution “to impose, levy, and collect a special sales tax within Dade County, conditioned upon approval by a majority of the qualified voters residing within Dade County voting in a referendum thereon to be held May 22, 2018”; and an intergovernmental agreement between Dade County and the city of Trenton “for use and distribution of proceeds generated by the” tax.
The commission had held a special referendum on the TSPLOST last year, combining it with a Trenton city election in November 2017. The tax was voted down, but turnout was miserable and the commission had announced at its February meeting it would give the voters another stab at TSPLOST in this year’s election, when two county commissioners and two board of education members are to be chosen.
The TSPLOST tax would raise Dade’s sales tax from 7 cents to 8 for its five-year lifespan, and proceeds would only be used for transportation-related projects such as roads and sidewalks. The commission learned—and announced to the voting public—only on this latest reintroduction of the special tax that it may not be imposed on fuel.
The Thursday meeting, like all commission meetings, is open to the public.
