Trenton Tree City President Eloise Gass marshaled a pretty impressive crowd this morning for the city's annual Arbor Day tree planting, no surprise to those who know her because, as Mr. Shakespeare would have it, "Though she be but little she is fierce." Ms. Gass noted that this was Tree City's 33rd year in Trenton.
The tree this year was a red dogwood, planted in the lot between Bank of Dade's North Main location and its drive-through facility in memory of former bank president Edward Wilkie. Mayor Alex Case read a proclamation in praise of trees, urging townspeople to plant more of them. On hand besides Tree City volunteers were dignitaries from Bank of Dade and the Trenton and Dade County governments, Dade 4-Hers, Georgia Forestry rangers and, of course, a couple of Dade's "Men in Yellow," prison trusties who dug the hole. In Dade, trusties help with everything from recycling to gardening.
