Dade County High School principal James Fahrney and Dr. Jan Harris, superintendent of schools, issued their own news releases as to the gun-at-school incident reported by the sheriff's office in the article just preceding. The Planet is pleased to present those releases here in their entirety.
Today, a 17-year-old male student brought an unloaded handgun to Dade County High School. The gun was transferred to another 17-year-old male student. DCHS Assistant Principal Brent Cooper was investigating an unrelated discipline incident when he uncovered the gun in a student’s backpack. The handgun was confiscated without incident.
Students were in classes when the event occurred. The school was immediately put on a code yellow lockdown that lasted approximately 20 minutes.
Dade County Sheriff’s deputies transported the two students to jail and charges are pending.
Statement by Superintendent Jan Harris
Safety is our top priority. Any threat to our students, faculty and staff will be treated seriously. Students such as these who violate the law will be prosecuted.
Mr. Fahrney and Assistant Principal Brent Cooper did an outstanding job investigating this matter along with our School Resource Officer David Duvall. This is a textbook example of excellent supervision and teamwork.
We are thankful that the gun was unloaded and no one was harmed. We are also thankful to work cooperatively with Sheriff Cross, Chief Smith and Dade County’s brave officers who serve and protect our students on a daily basis.
Board of Education Chair Carolyn Bradford added the following statement:
Mr. Fahrney and his team acted quickly according to DCS protocol. In doing so, the matter was resolved immediately and without incident. The DCHS administration is to be commended for their exemplary supervision of our students.
