Dr. Harris Announces New School Security Measures

Editor's Note: This is a statement released today by Dr. Jan Harris, Superintendent of Dade's school system.

In Dade County Schools, safety is our number one priority.

We are updating our emergency plans. We regularly have safety drills. We are reviewing the latest software to update our surveillance cameras (276 cameras in our schools) and equipment. We are conducting meetings with law enforcement officials, parents, students and community members to share information and seek input.

We are adding an officer/SRO for each school effective tomorrow, March 22, 2018. Additionally, we are working together to find funding opportunities for long-term SROs at each school next year.

All facilities have cameras and secure entrances. Further classroom and building enhancements are being examined.

We are also examining our Alternative School program and plan to move it to another time/location next year. Additional measures are being considered to provide mentoring and counseling in cooperation with mental health officials for our at-risk students.
