Dr. Jan Harris, superintendent of Dade Schools, announced via text this morning: "We are happy to report that there will be an officer/SRO at each school effective tomorrow."
"SRO" is an acronym for "school resource officer," a law enforcement officer with special training for school protection.
Dr. Harris also said long-term planning is underway for further security measures next year.
This comes in an environment not only of deadly school shootings nationally but of three arrests at Dade High in recent weeks for less horrific offenses that nevertheless shook the community. Two 17-year-old boys were arrested for a gun-at-school incident in which one brought an unloaded firearm to class to sell to the other, and an 18-year-old girl was booked for scrawling a death threat on a school bathroom wall.
The super has announced she will give a press conference at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 21, at the Dade Sheriff's Office.
The Dade Board of Education is to meet at 6 p.m. on Monday at its offices in front of the high school.
