As spring tries to come to Dade County, our 4-H’ers are prepping our gardens for a new season. The Community Club was busy this week spreading straw on the lasagna garden. We’ll be starting some plants from seeds, but we’ll also check out the FFA plant sale in April for some healthy plants to transplant.
Community Club members were also finishing up our displays for the 4-H booth at the Read-to-Lead event at the Dade County Public Library. They had a full afternoon of sanding, painting and gardening.
The Davis 5th grade 4-H Club learned about the Georgia Barrier Islands. Several of them had been to Jekyll Island and remembered the sand dunes, sea oats and sweet-tasting seafood. Did you know that sea oats are related to sugar cane, so seafood in an area with sea oats tastes sweeter than average? The 5th graders also learned about our government and careers in government-related areas.
We are starting to get reservation responses from exhibitors and classes that will be attending our annual Ag Day on May 10. Teachers and students enjoy the farm animals, demonstrations of craft skills and displays of equipment and machinery throughout the Ag Center. Last year around 500 students attended Ag Day.
