The fourth annual Dade County Health and Wellness Fair will be Saturday, April 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Dade County Public Library. There will be free blood pressure checks and chair massages, and the CHI Memorial Mary Ellen Locher Mobile Health Bus will be there. This will make it easy to get your annual mammogram screening.
To schedule your mammogram, call (423) 495-4040 or (866) 591-2254. You can get preregistration forms online at memorial.org/mobile-mammography or at the front desk of the library. To get the mammogram, you must have your doctor’s full name, driver’s license or state ID and insurance card.
Come and get information and tips on how to live healthier. This event is sponsored by the Dade County Commission and the Dade County Public Library.
At this month’s Book Club meeting we will be doing something we have not done before, discussing a book for the second time. This is because many of our members were not attending then, we had not all read it the first time, and those of us who had, remembered it as a book worthy of a second look. This book, Contempt of Court: The Turn of the Century Lynching That Launched a Hundred Years of Federalism, by Leroy Phillips, is about the trial and lynching of Ed Johnson in Chattanooga and the subsequent events.
Johnson, a black man, was accused of raping a white woman and found guilty on almost no evidence at all. The case was appealed to the Supreme Court and became the first criminal trial to be tried before the Supreme Court. It’s a dramatic story, and the case also set the legal precedent that paved the way for the Supreme Court to find later that the Bill of Rights applies to the states.
Family Movie Day is Thursday, April 19, at 3:30 p.m. Bring the kids and enjoy a movie with free popcorn and water. Call the library for the title at (706) 657-7857.
