Sgt. Chad Reports DUIs



Editor's Note: Sgt. Chad Payne, information officer for the Dade County Sheriff's Office, reported as follows on April 30.

On April 21, at approximately 2 a.m., a Dade County deputy observed a vehicle traveling south on Highway 11. As the vehicle approached the deputy, who was traveling north, the deputy had to swerve his vehicle off of the roadway and into the grass to avoid being hit head-on by the vehicle.

After turning around and approaching the vehicle from the rear, the deputy observed the vehicle cross the centerline several more times. The deputy also observed the driver throw trash out the window just before he activated his emergency equipment for a traffic stop.


​​After he came to a stop, it was found that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. It was also found that his license was suspended, and he was listed as a ​​habitual violator. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the jail for booking.

  • Jonathan M Brown, 34, of Rising Fawn, was charged with

  • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol

  • Failure to Maintain Lane

  • Littering

  • Habitual Violator (Felony).

On Friday, April 28, at approximately 10 pm, a deputy observed a vehicle traveling on Highway 299. The deputy reported that the vehicle almost struck her head-on, so she turned around on the vehicle.

She observed that the vehicle was traveling extremely close to a semi-truck. The deputy activated her emergency equipment, and the vehicle continued on to Highway 11 North. The vehicle continued several more miles, refusing to stop for the deputy.


The vehicle finally came to a stop in the 20,000 block of Highway 11 North. It was found that the driver had a suspended license. The driver was transported to the jail ​​for booking.

Shonta J Walker, 47, of Wildwood, was charged with

  • Fleeing/Attempting to Elude

  • Failure to Maintain Lane

  • Driving While License Suspended/Revoked.
