Library News: Sign Your Kid Up For Summer Reading!

We’re in a flurry here at the library getting ready for Summer Reading. Staff members are packing the bags that the kids will get. Signups begin Monday, May 7, and can be done online at chrl.org.

We aren’t open on Mondays, but you can sign up online and then come by later in the week to pick up your bags with reading records, learning activities and more.

Kids need to have a library card, which is free for anyone who lives, works or owns property in Georgia. There is a $25 a year charge per family for out-of-state library cards. You will need to come into the library to get your card if you don’t already have one. We’ll have more information on Summer Reading in the coming weeks. The first program will be Thursday, June 7.

The Book Club will meet Tuesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. to discuss The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. This book, written in the 1980s, has recently been a series on Hulu. Join us for this discussion.

We will have a Family Movie on Thursday, May 17, at 3:30 p.m. You can call for the title at (706) 657-7857.

Some of you may be interested in a program the local historical society is having. On Saturday, May 19, from 4 to 6 p.m., there will be a cemetery walking tour, Tales and Secrets from the Grave, at the Baptist Cemetery and the Payne Cemetery, both in Trenton. Local actors will be sharing the lives of several former citizens, T.H.B. Cole, John Garrett Jacoway, John Retherford, John Rollins, James A. Case, M.A.B. Tatum, Lemuel Coates and Rev. S.H. and Little Eddie Thurman. These characters all have interesting stories to tell.

The program is free, but donations are appreciated. You may start the tour at either cemetery. For directions to the cemetery, pick up a flyer at the library.
