Early Voting Ends Friday, Election Day Tuesday: Meanwhile, Poll Workers Needed!

Early voting for the May 22 primary election ends at 2 p.m. Friday. Election Day itself is Tuesday. But with as many candidates running as there are for the four local posts up for grabs these years, runoff elections are likely and don't forget the general election is not until November. One way or the other, Carolyn Hixson at the Dade County Board of Elections says she needs poll workers.

Hours are part-time and Ms. Hixson admits the pay is nothing to write home about. "You get enough to pay for your gas and your lunch; that's about it," she said. "It's more a community service."

But the atmosphere is friendly, you get to visit with your neighbors and the air conditioning is working well. If interested, call Ms. Hixson at (706) 657-8170.

As of Monday morning, Ms. Hixson and the other poll workers reported they'd had about 400 early voters. Between 30 and 40 people had shown up this weekend for Saturday voting, they said, which wasn't bad considering there'd been nothing going on on the square.

They said Saturday voting tended to be heavier if there were a farmers market or other event bringing pedestrians to the downtown area.
