Jailbreak Update: Attempted Escapee One of Several Burglary Suspects

A few more details have emerged about this morning’s unsuccessful escape attempt from the Dade County jail. The would-be fugitive has not yet been identified, but Sgt. Chad Payne, information officer for the Dade County Sheriff’s Department, promises a fuller release on Sunday.

From preliminary information gathered by the sergeant, apparently the prisoner was one of five suspects who had been arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with burglaries that are still under investigation. The suspects had been apprehended as a result of two separate traffic stops by two separate deputies, during which they were found with stolen items still in their possession. It is unclear at this time whether the burglaries were connected, but Sgt. Payne believed at least one had happened on Ponderosa Drive in Trenton.

The escape attempt took place in an area of the Dade lockup in which inmates are allowed to talk with their attorneys, but which is also used as a general holding area. Sgt. Payne explained that new arrestees are often segregated in this area from the general jail population on an “investigative hold” while detectives work their cases, to keep them from comparing stories.

The suspect in question was asking to be released, said the sergeant. “They told him, you aren’t getting out until you see a judge," said Sgt. Payne, "and he said, ‘I’m going to get out one way or the other.’”

And that’s what happened after midnight, though Sgt. Payne could not confirm an exact time. The inmate was being detained in the holding area alone, he said, when: “They heard a ruckus and they went in there and he had busted the ceiling tiles out and was trying to crawl into the ceiling.”

When guards apprehended the suspect, said Sgt. Payne, he fought back. “He wouldn’t comply and they ended up having to Tase him,” said the sergeant. “It was a big tussle.”

The inmate was fine after the Tasing incident, said Sgt. Payne, and was not taken for medical treatment. He is still at the jail now and is no longer giving the guards trouble, though his release looks further in the future than it did before: Charges of attempting to escape and inciting riot in a penal institution have been added to the burglary counts he was already facing.

Again, the Sheriff's Department has not yet released the attempted escapee's name, but in the weekly arrest report that it does routinely release (which will shortly be available on The Dade Planet) the only male listed as arrested on Thursday on burglary charges was Eric Anthony Inman, 36,, of Hollywood, Ala.

A female arrestee was also listed as charged with burglary on Thursday: Amber Anna Turner, 30, of Flat Rock, Ala.
