Graduating seniors start their triumphant march through the lower schools, soon to be followed by a with-any-luck just as triumphant march through life, armed with youth, courage, a good education--and let us not forget cellphones!
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, said a certain hack writer from Avon. Was he ever proved right this May, this week especially and this particular day times 10. Breached dams! Threatening floodwaters! Train wrecks! Jail breaks! Rough winds indeed--The Planet pens these words while monitoring the county nervously for meteorite strikes or UFO landings.
And that's not even to mention the breaking local government news that will adorn these pages as soon as The Planet can climb out of this earthquake fissure, cling to a palm tree until the tsunami subsides and break it (with a piece of hardened lava from the volcanic eruption).
All right, all right. The Planet may wallow in hyperbole from time to time, and is willing to apologize for it with any required degree of sincerity. But the fact is, for a peaceful rural place like this, where a change of operating hours at the county dump is the stuff of headlines, enough has happened in Dade County this week to keep The Planet hoppin'. So before before any more rough winds arrive to chase them off the front page--a rare May blizzard? Zombie Apocalypse?-- shall we pause a moment here to congratulate the graduating Dade County High School seniors?

Dr. Jan Harris, superintendent of Dade Schools, furnished these photographs of the yearly March of the Seniors. On Thursday, members of DCHS Class of 2018 were taken by bus to Dade Middle School and the two county elementary schools, where they marched in their caps and gowns through the corridors to receive the congratulations of the younger students--and to demonstrate to them that there really is a happy ending, if you can only grit your teeth and make it through fifth-period math.
The soon-to-be grads were then treated to lunch at White Oak Baptist Church.
Next week marks the end of the Class of 2018's 12-year march through the Dade school system. The last day of school is May 23. Class Night celebration is May 24 at 7 p.m., and graduation itself is at 7 p.m. next Friday, May 25.
Congratulations from The Planet, Class of 2018, as you embark on your next march! To thine own selves be true! Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none! Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice! Fear not greatness! And may no rougher winds shake you than the ones this May, to wit, getting your Dade Planet homage delayed a day or so while another old hack played catchup.
And now, darling buds, The Planet must return to its appointed orbit. The Apaches are attacking.
