Have you checked out the Great American Read yet? You can vote for your favorite books each day. These are not all just adult books. There are several junior books on the list that some of you may have enjoyed long ago. Maybe you have a child or grandchild who would love to read one of those now.
Here are some of the junior books from the 100 Great American books: Alice in Wonderland, Anne of Green Gables, Charlotte’s Web, The Giver, Hatchet, The Little Prince and Where the Red Fern Grows. I’ve read most of these, and they are all quality books. Check one out!
This week, our Summer Reading program had visitors from Reflection Riding. These included a couple of owls and a red-shouldered hawk. We do surveys each week on our programs and when asked what could make the program better, one of our young patrons suggested we bring a lion, a tiger and a zebra. We’ll have to think about that one.
The Thursday, July 5, program is a real crowd pleaser, with Comedic Juggler Todd Keys. Adults will love his program, too.
For those who might be interested in doing local or family research: our old newspapers, which were on microfilm, have been digitized and can be searched on one of our computers. We also have Walker County newspapers on the same program.
Soon we will be purchasing two more computers which will have this information loaded on them so that more people can use them. I helped someone this morning find an article about his grandfather’s farm in a 1947 newspaper. We also have paper copies of the newspapers,
although some are very fragile. By using the search engine, you don’t have to slowly look through the hard copies.
Our next teen program is Wednesday, July 11, at 2 p.m. The program will be live music and entertainment.
