Sgt. Chad Payne, information officer for the Dade County Sheriff's Office, returns to regular duty today after an extended training absence.

On June 23, at approximately 2 a.m., a Dade deputy observed a vehicle traveling south on Highway 11 in the area of Doyle Lane. The deputy observed the vehicle cross the center line, and then strike a deer, without appearing to touch the brakes or slow down.

The deputy conducted a traffic stop and immediately detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from within the vehicle. After attempting some field sobriety test, the driver was placed under arrest and transported to the jail without incident.

Brandon K. Tierce, 45, of Trenton, was charged with

  • Driving Under the Influence

  • Open Container

  • Improper Lane Change.

Editor's Note: Sgt. Payne was unable from his information to discern the fate of the deer, but fears the worst.
