Summer Reading isn’t just for kids, you know. We have some adult programs scheduled and one of them is our regular monthly Book Club.
The Book Club will meet next on Tuesday, July 17, to discuss Raven Black by Ann Cleeves. This is the first book in the Shetland mystery series. Read them first and check out the TV version on Netflix. Ann Cleeves is also the author of the Vera series, which I highly recommend. Join us at 7 p.m. to discuss Raven Black.
We had another adult program scheduled for July 10, How to Record your Family History. We are going to have to reschedule that because we were going to utilize our new recording studio, and it is not quite finished. We will show you how to record family history on paper and digitally and we’ll do live recordings in our new studio when it is ready. We will let you know as soon as this program is re-scheduled.
Have you voted yet for your favorite book from the Great American Read? You can vote once a day, every day. Last week I highlighted the children’s books included in the 100 Great American Read books. This week I’ll mention the Youth or Teen books included. Of course, all of these can be enjoyed by adults as well.
They are A Separate Peace (anybody remember reading this is Mrs. West’s English class in high school?), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, the Harry Potter series, The Chronicles of Narnia, Looking for Alaska, the Hunger Games series, The Outsiders (anyone remember reading this in my English class?), the Lord of the Rings series, Little Women and The Book Thief.
My adult Book Club enjoyed reading The Book Thief, and Little Women is a book that I loved dearly when I was young.
I’ve cast several votes for the Harry Potter books. I first read these and listened to the audiobooks with my son and I’ve since read them many times over and watched the movies. These are not only great stories, but they’ve helped make readers of many kids and adults.
Our Summer Reading program for July 12 is Tommy Johns Presents, a great variety show with magic, puppets, music and more. The show begins at 10:30 a.m. Our last summer program, on July 19, is Libraries Got Talent! If you’re interested in performing, call or come by the library to find out what to do to participate. Our next Teen program is Wednesday, July 18, at 2 p.m. and we’ll be having karaoke. Come join the fun.
