Apparently the two fatal auto accidents on Lookout Mountain Sunday night were unrelated. Capt. Mark Perry of the Georgia State Patrol said they happened about two hours apart but no connection had so far been discovered. "It's one of those things that you scratch your head about," he said.
Capt. Perry said the same trooper had worked both accidents and had gotten home to rest only around 4 a.m. He would not release details before speaking to the trooper as he was not sure the families had been notified.
Here's what is clear so far: One accident was in Dade County, and Sgt. Chad Payne, information officer for the Dade County Sheriff's Department, supplied this information about that one:
It was a one-vehicle accident. The vehicle had left the roadway just east of, or below, the first horseshoe curve on Highway 136, and it had been there for an unknown amount of time when it was discovered. Dispatch was notified around midnight and the scene had been cleared by approximately 4:30 a.m.
There was a female fatality, a passenger in her mid-20s, and the male driver, also in his mid-20s, was in very critical condition when the two were transported from the scene. His condition is currently unknown.
Georgia State Patrol was called in to work the accident, and GSP's Accident Reconstruction Team was called in to rework the scene.
The other accident was also a single-vehicle accident and it happened around 10 p.m. Sunday on Highway 157 near Nickajack Road. There was a fatality but again, no names have yet been released.
Capt. Perry said he should have a fuller report to release around lunchtime.
