Library News: Libraries Rock! Talent Show Winners Named

We ended our Summer Reading program this year with our first-ever talent show! In addition to our entries in the talent show, we had some kids who performed in open mic sessions.

Although the winners were chosen by audience voting, we had three judges who commented on the outstanding performances and we would like to thank them: Martha Baker, Audrey Clark and Rex Blevins. They offered our competitors a lot of praise and encouragement.

In the ages 2-7 category, the winner was Malachi Dee, who performed a song from The Greatest Showman. The winner in the 8-13 category was vocalist Zoie Gibson, who sang Scars to Your Beautiful. The runners-up in the same category were Bryer Donaldson and Ruth Pack, a magician and a ventriloquist.

First-place winners received a $30 cash prize and the runners-up got $20. Congratulations to all our performers!

Kids have until July 27 to turn in their reading logs for more prize drawings. Bring them by as soon as possible.

Next week we’ll try to have some numbers on participation in our Summer Reading programs. Things may be a little quieter around the library for the next couple of weeks, but we resume our Ready to Read programs for preschoolers after school starts.

Our Book Club met last week and discussed the mystery Raven Black. Our next book is Isaac’s Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History by Erik Larsen. This is the true story of the hurricane that hit Galveston, Texas, in 1900. If you read it, join us for the discussion on Tuesday, August 21, at 7 p.m.

Remember, you can vote online at the Great American Read every day between now and the fall when the winner of America’s favorite novel is announced. You can also vote here at the library. Please vote whenever you are in the library and help us learn which of the 100 Great American Books is the favorite in Dade County.

There are many types of books in the 100 books. There are several adventure novels, if that is your favorite: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, The Call of the Wild by Jack London, Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Check some of them out.
