Want to walk on the wild side? Come by the library and check out a banned book.
I’m a little behind on this, but one week in September is designated as Banned Book Week and we have a display on this at the library. We have some of these books on display with a brown paper bag covering the book with this message on the bag, “Caution! Some people do not want you to read this book. Lift the bag and see the banned book, you rebel, you!”
Many books have been banned by different organizations for various reasons, even classics like To Kill a Mockingbird and Huckleberry Finn. Other frequently banned books are Moby Dick, which a Texas school system said conflicted with community values; the Harry Potter series, which some thought promoted witchcraft and the occult; Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck; and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, both books that I taught in my high school English classes.
So walk on the wild side. Read a banned book! Find out for yourself instead of listening to someone else’s opinion.
We have a traveling portrait exhibit at the library called Just Kids, with photographs by Ryan Johnson. This is made possible by the Georgia Public Library Service and will travel to several libraries in Georgia. There are 16 portraits depicting a handful of families that are members of the Chattahoochee Valley Down Syndrome Association. The photographer focused on individuals and their siblings.
As one viewer of the exhibit said, “For many people, it’s like they can only see, and may fear, the challenges involved with children with disabilities. They can’t conceive of the enjoyable times and love within these families. I believe Ryan’s work can help change that perception.” The exhibit will be at the library through Oct. 16.
Join us at the library on Wednesday, Oct. 3 for Coffee with a Cop from 10:30 a.m. to noon or Cookies with a Cop from 3:30-5 p.m. Come have coffee in the morning or cookies in the afternoon, if you’re just getting out of school, to chat with our local police officers. No agenda, just a chance to have conversations and get to know your local police officers.
Crazy 8s Math Club is still going on at the library on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Just call the library at (706) 657-7857 to sign your child up. It’s for kids from K to 5.
We have some new books on display in the Junior Readers section, and each child who checks out a new Junior book will get a Maker Challenge Kit. This week’s Challenge Kit is a Marshmallow Catapult. Sounds like fun!
Children’s Day will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6, on the square in front of the library from noon-3 p.m. Parents may bring children for the following FREE services: scoliosis and spine screening, eye screening, dental screening, hearing screening, free Children’s Day T-shirt, baby seat checks, fingerprinting & photo IDs, and, just for fun, jump houses, horse rides for children and face painting.
