Packing or buying school lunch is a daily debate for many families. Dade County Schools is hoping to educate parents about healthy school choices and encourage them to take advantage of convenient and well-balanced school lunches as part of National School Lunch Week celebrations this week, Oct. 8-12.
The National School Lunch Week (NSLW) theme, "School Lunch - Lots 2 Love," reminds school communities and parents about the many nutritious choices and continued improvements to school lunch menus. Dade County Schools has an award-winning Farm to School program with locally sourced ingredients featured daily on school menus. October’s Farm to School Harvest of the Month includes locally grown apples, butternut squash and cabbage.
“Georgia-grown fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat milk and whole-grain-rich options are just a sampling of what’s offered in our cafeterias,” says Dade County Schools Director of Nutrition Dr. Cleta Long. “We focus on our students’ nutrition but also try our best to incorporate their feedback when introducing new menu items and serving alternatives.”
Students will be encouraged to show their love for school lunch this week with specially planned menus, decorations, cafeteria events and more. Included in those special events, the Dade system will be serving its own version of a GA Day menu item on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and will host a Celebrity Server Day on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week (NSLW) in 1962. During this annual weeklong celebration, School Nutrition Association members and students around the country celebrate what makes their local school lunch program special. Parents and students can follow the fun on Facebook.com/TrayTalk or TrayTalk.org .
