Wonka Comes to the Library for the Witching Season

Editor's note: Regular library columnist Linda Wilson is on vacation this week.

The Crazy 8s Math Club continues with grades K-2 on Tuesdays and 3-5 on Thursday afternoons from 4:15-5 p.m. Math is such a struggle for so many kids. Why not have them enjoy an activity at the library that combines math and fun while learning?

The Dade High Class of 1968 enjoyed its 50th class reunion at the library on Saturday, Oct. 6. Class members had been planning this event at the library for most of this year. They met monthly and planned, and as I visited the library at about 1 p.m. on Saturday, the library had been transformed into a maroon-and-white vision. Guests began arriving at 4 p.m. and those in attendance had a great time remembering their tender years.

The library will begin another transformation soon as preparation for Trick or Treat. This year’s theme will be based on the book Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl. Most have seen the Willie Wonka movies which were based on this book. Willie Wonka, owner of the factory, offers Golden Tickets for children to visit his factory and experience the making of the candies that they love so much.

Wonka was portrayed by Gene Wilder in the1971 movie and by Johnny Depp in a slightly more sinister version in 2005. Young or old can appreciate the flawed characters that children and adults portray in the book and films. One wonders what the staff at the library will cook up to replicate the Chocolate Factory. Trick or Treat at the library will be from 5:30-7:30 pm on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Next week is the monthly Book Club meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16. The book for this month is appropriate for the “witching” season. It is entitled The Witches: Salem, 1692 by Stacy Schiff. It is available at the library and on RB Digital as an audiobook.

Family movie night will be Thursday, Oct. 18, beginning at 4 p.m. The title will be a surprise since it is not listed on the calendar for the month.

See you at the library in October!
